I believe that all children should at least try to be creative, to see if it is still there…Babies are born with a curiosity into the world around them and when they grow up they will explore new possibilities, but a lot of children change. They go to school, have to follow the rules, get numb behind screens and loose all their innovative and creative minds, of which they were born with.

So, give children the change to see if there is still some creativity left by offering them the most creative and fun gift:

Don’t let them be entertained by all the toys, television and computers, but let them decide how they want to play.
There are game creating sets on the market, those are a great start and can be a great help for your child to get ideas.

Tips and Ideas to create your own game

We don’t write a whole book about the game creating process, but we would love to give you some basic tips and ideas to start with. Think, rethink, write it down, draw, make and test, test, test, but above all: have fun creating it first!

The first thing you have to decide is the level of complexity of the game. Are you making a game for preschoolers or adults? Does it have to be easy to follow and understand or can it be more complex for older children? Do you want to have a learning element in it or an exciting story-line?
Think about a story for your game. Who are the characters and what are they going to do? What is their goal and what are the obstacles? Is your game a game of luck (with dices), do you want to practice a skill (like drawing, math) or is it going to be an adventure game?
Write down the game elements. What do you need for this game? What kind of pieces? What is the goal of the game, how many players can play and so on. Think about the rules for the game and write them down. Will the story be interesting when played multiple times?
Draw. Make a board design. How does the playing board looks like? What does it need? A start and finish line? Landing spaces? Color codes? Do you need playing cards? How do the cards look like? What’s on the cards and what do they do?
Create your game pieces. Make your game board, pawns, cards and whatever else you need for your game. Use old paper, cardboard, foam, glue and scotch. Be creative and inventive! You can even use some photos to make the cards!
Test, test, test and retest the game with friends and family. Does it play well? Does it take an decent amount of time? Is it fun and exciting?
